Museum Night Estonia 2020 – Time in the Night

Once a year, Estonian museums open their doors to visitors for a night full of special events and exhibitions, celebrating the Museum Night – and the entrance is free!

In 2020, the much-loved Museum Night will take place under the umbrella title Time in the Night - or, in Estonian, Öös on aega. Last year, more than 100.000 people took part of the Museum Night, exploring over 200 museums, galleries, archives and other places during the 5 hours of the event.

What does TIME mean for You? We seem to have less and less of it, yet aren’t we all supposed to have the same 24 hours to operate with? But do we? How do we spend time, sense and feel time, talk about time? How have poets, writers, artists tried to capture that fleeting, fickle thing that is time? How do scientists measure time in nature or in outer space?

Museums seem to be all about time – collecting, preserving, keeping and mediating nuggets from different eras in their collections, in the shape of stories and objects. What to collect, how to keep, how to tell the stories of a different time, today? So this Museum Night we invite our audience to explore time in all its forms and aspects. Our days are busy and filled, but there’s still time in the night.

The bulk of the audience of the Museum Night is always local, but visitors from Finland, Latvia and Russia are fast becoming true fans of our Museum Night. Our museums are recognising this by providing more English tours and events during each Museum Night – or making sure the event can be enjoyed to the full regardless of what language you speak.

Museum Night spreads out across Estonia, the museums participating in the programme will open their doors from 6pm to 11pm and during this time the entrance will be free. Museum Night Estonia is organized by Estonian museums and the Estonian Museum Association.

You can find all participating museums on a map here and the programmes in Estonian here
